Transportation

Santorini, Greece is almost 30 square miles, so it’s one of the larger Cycladic islands and with the rugged landscape, it’s not all easily walkable. There are several walking paths, but at some point you’ll have to rely on transportation. If you can’t afford to rent a car, there’s the bus. The closer you are to Fira, Santorini’s capital, the more easily you’ll be able to access the rest of the island. It costs about 2 euros to ride and stops in Oia, Fira, Kamari and the airport. You may have to do a fair bit of walking to reach less populated villages, so bring comfortable shoes for hiking. To explore some of the outskirt villages, you can rent a car for about 26 euros per day.

Food

It’s true that some of the tourist restaurants in Santorini, Greece can be a bit pricey if you’re trying to watch your wallet. But not all of the restaurants are expensive. Find restaurants that primarily serve locals rather than restaurants aimed at tourists. This may mean going further inland but there are a few examples of excellent Greek cuisine for the locals in Kamari or Perissa. In areas with heavy tourist traffic, there are street vendors where you can eat a delicious gyro for little more than the cost of a bus ticket. Traditional tavernas in some of the quieter villages but also along the beaches are also reasonably priced. You can also buy produce from a local market and take it back to one of the Santorini hotels or find a place to have a picnic.
